we aren’t experiencing an abnormal level of earthquakes, the amount being experienced is perfectly normal. it is just that now they are reporting all quakes in the media, even the ones that do little or no damage.
There actually aren’t any more earthquakes than usual (or average) at the moment. It’s just that there have been several unusually damaging quakes (Haiti last year; Christchurch, New Zealand this year), and two of the seven largest quakes of the past 50 years in Chile (Feb 2010) and Japan (March 2011). With these sorts of things, once there’s been one event, the media tend to pick up on subsequent events. So after a big quake, it sounds as though they are suddenly happening everywhere, when in fact they have been happening all the time, and we just haven’t heard about most of them.
