Well I’ve always loved the sea (I was brought up in the middle of the Midlands so was always excited by trips to the seaside – and still am!). When I was doing my A-levels at school I promised myself that if I failed them I would apply to join either the Navy, or the Merchant Navy. Although I’m very happy that I passed my A-levels, went to University and ended up doing what I’m doing now, I do sometimes wonder what my life would have been like if I’d gone to sea instead.

I used to work in Banks writing computer code to help them trade on the stock markets and currency markets. It was quite good fun for a while but then I got bored of it because I wasn’t learning anything new. That taught me that it is more important to have a job that really love doing and that keeps challenging you. Being a scientist is always about learning new things.

But if I wasn’t a scientist I’d quite like to be a chef.

I like that question! I think if I couldn’t do anything sciency at all, I would either be a stuntperson or a musician (violin). Or maybe something in the media, like writing articles.

I would have loved to continue to be a photographer. I love it! Maybe as a travel journalist 🙂
