Well, I wouldn’t want to BE someone else, I like who I am. But if you mean if I couldn’t do my job anymore which of their jobs would I like to have…..I’d have a hard choice. They all do very cool things. I’d like to use my skills to fight cancer. The software I use is also used by pharmaceutical companies, so I could transition into that quite easily. But that’s not a real answer, because Sarah doesn’t do what I do and I don’t really like working in a lab. (sorry Sarah !) I like robots, and I’ve done programming, so I think I might be good at that – but I’m not sure I really want to go back to programming. (sorry Alan) I love watching shows about the rain forest on Discovery channel, and I care about global warming, so I’d be really tempted to join Murray’s research, but I don’t like bugs and I like warm showers and clean sheets, so I’m not sure I could do that for long. (sorry Murray) I really like babies, and my daughter was in an experiment similar to what Caspar does, which I thought was really fascinating, so I think that would be fun. OK. so, if I couldn’t do what I do anymore, I’d join Caspar working with babies.
Gosh that’s a hard question. All four of my zone mates do such interesting things that it’s hard to choose. I’m deeply interested in what intelligence is and how it works, and I think Caspar’s work with babies and trying to understand how babies learn and develop is somehow the closest to that – except I work with robots instead of babies! So I think I’ll have to say Caspar:-)
Hi, this may sound a bit cheesey, but I am very happy with what I am doing! I feel very strongly about the area of work I am in, as I explained in another post http://ias.im/35.1640. I also think that the skills that each and interests each of us has taken us into our different areas, so we are all happy with what we’re doing now. That said, it would be fantastic to see something you have actually produced physically, so would be cool to be in Alan’s shoes for a while making some robots!
If i could have diana’s computer skills, alan’s practical technology skills, sarah’s knowledge of chemistry and murray’s sense of adventure.. then I’d be Batman. or about as close as it is possible to get. 🙂
Sarah – I wouldn’t want it for a day job, but it might be cool for a vacation. Hey Murray you should do eco-tourism – instead of hiring helpers, you could charge people for “getting” to come along…..
Yes. Alan’s work and mine are very similar. In fact some of my colleagues build little robots to see how they learn about the world and I make small imulations of artifical brains (called neural networks) to study learning
