I am just about to start research on drink (in adults not babies obviously) so i will actually be able to go to the pub and claim that i am still doing science…
(oh and don’t tell my boss but i once went back to work after a few drinks and fell asleep at my desk.. i woke up after midnight and set off the burglar alarm while leaving the office. The security guards were very nice about it .)
LOL. Yes. At my university we have several pubs and bars which we go to quite a lot. We’re a very social bunch! When I work at the zoo, we have a social club bar, which we go to at least once a week. On the weekends I go out with friends too. Last summer I wen to Ibiza which was awesome. The clubs there are wicked!
Hey don’t binge drink though – the alcohol does a lot of short and long-term damage to your body when you have too much!!!
I work really long hours but I try to socialise. A lot of my friends are doing PhDs in my building too and the chemistry department is next door to the student union so quite often we’ll go across to the pub after work and play some pool or do a pub quiz or just sit and have a drink and chat about our work. We’re all doing totally different projects so it’s good to hear about what other people are up to and relax and try to forget about work for a little while…
I do have an occasional drink, we have some friends in the neighborhood who like to get together on a weekend and have a “happy hour”. We all bring our kids, who play together very nicely. We don’t get really drunk – I don’t like that – but I do enjoy a couple. I treat my job like a normal job. I work 9-6 most times, although I do put in more hours when there’s a deadline to meet. I know some academics who generally work longer hours, and during grad school we’re expected to pretty much live in the lab.
